Ilinizas Expedition

The perfect peaks for both trekkers and technical climbers

Once a huge volcano, the Illinizas exploded into two summits: North (5,126 m) and South (5,248 m).

Ecuador is awash with beautiful mountains. Climbers can see two of these up close on the Ilinizas expedition. The neighboring Illinizas peaks.

Formerly just one volcano, the Illiniza peaks were separated into two summits after a massive eruption broke them apart. Although, this was a massive gain for climbers.

The two peaks are great routes for those looking for an unforgettable adventure in Ecuador. Moreover, both cater to inexperienced and experienced climbers.

Illiniza North is a rocky peak, and it isn't very snowy. The normal route is not too challenging and does not present any technical parts. Therefore, it's the perfect peak for trekkers, soft climbers, or for those looking to get acclimatized.

On the other hand, Illiniza South is for more experienced ice climbers. The normal route has become more difficult because of glacier recession.

The route is very technical and cannot be climbed without a certified ASEGUIM (Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides) guide. Luckily for you, we're here to climb with you to the top of these two neighboring beauties.

The peaks on the Ilinizas expedition are about 60 Km from Quito. It is recommended you take the time to get acclimatized to the region beforehand.

Climbers can get used to the altitude by climbing the neighboring mountain, Coraźon. This alternate peak has amazing views of the central valley and other surrounding peaks.

We have two-day itineraries for travelers who only want to do one of the peaks. However, the Ilinizas expedition is your best way to experience these two neighboring crowning jewels.
